Sandra Hamel 1971 Olds Cutlass Convertible From the time I was a teenager, I have always loved classic cars. But it was not until May of 2009 that I gave serious thought to owning one of my own. My brother-in-law, Ron Newman, had been “scoping” the ads, car shows, and talking with fellow car enthusiasts to locate the “right” car for me. The search didn’t take long – less than a month. When Ron heard of a ’71 Olds Cutlass SX convertible for sale in Scarborough that had arrived 3 months earlier from Beltsville, Maryland. Ron took me to see and test drive the car – it was “love at first sight”. I first saw it on a Sunday and it was parked in my garage the following Wednesday -- I had full ownership! My daughter named the car “CRUELLA” because of the throttling sound her 455 cubic inch engine makes at idle – much like the sound of Cruella DeVille’s big car in Disney’s 101 Dalmations. Now a life-sized dalmation dog rides belted in the back seat. The car has brought many high-5’s and smiles cruising through the streets of Kennebunk and miles beyond. Before tucking Cruella into winter storage, my cruising partner, Wayne Taylor, and I took her for one more top down ride on November 3rd on full moonlit night along the beaches of Kennebunk. Cruising times are great!
Wayne Taylor 1935 Chevy Pickup It was bought new by my grandparents and used on the family farm until the late 1950’s. We hauled water, hay, and other farm items in it, and on one occasion, a calf was transported in the cab of the truck. My father drove the truck to work at the Kennebunk Water Company until 1961. The last day there, Charlie, one of his co-workers, tried all day to buy the truck for $100. My father said he couldn’t sell it because of the memories he had. My brother, Bob, and I put hydraulic brakes on the truck in the early 1960’s, before we went into the military. Bob drove it to Boothbay Harbor in the late 1960’s while stationed in the U.S. Coast Guard. I was serving in the U.S. Navy at the time until 1971 and soon after that, the truck was given to me by my father. I put a small block Chevrolet engine in it and a 3-speed transmission and a 1956 Chevrolet rear axle. My first car show was the Down East Street Rod show at Reid State Park in 1976. It was not used much after that while I was raising a family. In the last 10 to 12 years, I have put in an automatic transmissiion, power disc brakes, power windows and power steering, all to make the truck more road-worthy. I also repainted and pin striped it myself, matching the original color of green and black. My wife, who passed away in April 2008, liked riding in the old ’35 Chevypickup. I will not sell the truck because of sentimental reasons. The engine in the truck now was given to me by a high school friend, Vern Garrett. In September, I posted an advertisement at a cruise night: “WANTED: NICE LADY TO RIDE IN MY TRUCK”. A lady named Sandra called me and we made a date. The first night out, we took the ’35 Chevy out in the pouring rain, with the sound of one wiper blade screeching across the windshield. I still have the truck, Sandra has a 1971 Olds Cutlass convertible and we cruise together. Good times ahead!
Bob and Patty Lathrop 1948 Willys Overland Jeepster Convertible The 1948 Willys Overland Jeepster Convertible. Kaiser 6 cylinder flathead engine. Purchased by Pat and Bob Lothrop in October 2007. This car was found at the Fall Show at York Beach in. 2008. As any “As Is” purchase, many mechanical repairs needed to be completed including the traditional whitewall tires that were purchased through Fritz Auto in Arundel. Our “Uh-Huh” moment: We enjoyed going to various club car shows as spectators. However, I had a “Fetish” for a World War II Military Jeep… but found it completely impractical. Then we saw our Jeepster Convertible in 2006 at a car show and it was “For Sale”. But… we hesitated and another year past. Then, in October 2007, we went to the Fall Show in York Beach and there she was again. Patty and I went “Uh-Huh” and the rest became history. The repairs, the joining Maine Coastal Cruisers, making many good friends and finding a new enjoyment for Spring-Summer-Fall, and the club cruise ins…. Well we hope the ride continues Bob and Patty Lathrop
